Integrity & Methods
Editorial Standards & Transparency
Before It Was Normal produces factual history for curious adults. We treat historical documentation as evidence and maintain clear boundaries between archival records and modern creative interpretation.
1. Primary Evidence & Claim Ledgers
Every script passes through a claim ledger before production. We do not publish generic fact lists, invented dates, fictionalized personal quotes, or unsupported superlatives.
Titles reflect the exact question answered. We avoid mythical absolutes such as "before alarm clocks existed" when the knock-up service coexisted with clocks. Geographic scope and specific decades are explicitly cited.
2. Host Identity: Mabel Brisk
Mabel Brisk is an original fictional character and narrator created by Before It Was Normal. Her visual appearance and voice are crafted to provide warm, measured storytelling with the dry authority of an Old West madam.
We do not animate the mouths of real deceased historical figures from archival photographs. Original archival images remain still evidence; fictional characters and rendered reenactments are identified as illustrations.
3. Foley Sound Design (No Background Music)
We eliminated musical backing tracks in October 2026. Audio effects stem from visible physical contacts: ice tongs gripping a block, iron rollers pressing linen, clockwork latches tripping, or running water.
Quiet space allows the viewer to focus on the historical mechanism. Reconstructed sound effects are labeled as illustrative sound design, not period audio recordings.
4. Public Corrections Policy
If an archival citation, date, mechanical explanation, or name is inaccurate, we correct the record. We update public descriptions, pin correction comments, and log revisions in our permanent ledger.
